There’s a particular feeling that arrives before a big change. It doesn’t always announce itself with drama or urgency. Sometimes it arrives more quietly, in the middle of an ordinary Tuesday, or in the pause between one chapter of life and the next. It’s the feeling of standing at a threshold.
Maybe you know what exactly yours is… a career pivot you’ve neem circling for months. A relationship that has run its course. A version of yourself that you’re quietly outgrowing. The trip you’ve been considering investing in. Or maybe it’s harder to name than that, a simple knowing, a restlessness, a sense that something is shifting even if you can’t say what. Whatever your threshold is, you’re not alone within it and you don’t have to navigate it without some support.
What Does it Mean to Stand at a Threshold?
A threshold is a moment where you are between what was and what could be. Its the space between deciding and doing, between knowing and becoming. Personal growth rarely happens in a straight line. More often, it happens during these in-between moments, when we are brave enough to pause and ask the questions we’ve been avoiding. Questions like: What is the cost of staying exactly where I am? What feels quietly true for me, even if I haven’t said it out loud yet? What would it look like to give myself permission to move forward?
Why Some People Stay Stuck at the Threshold
One of the things we sometimes hear from people on the edge of a threshold is this: I’m not sure that I feel ready. And here is what we would love for you to consider, what if readiness isnt a feeling? What if its simply a willingness?
Waiting to feel ready before stepping forward is one of the great myths of personal development. The clarity, the confidence, the certainty we think that we need to feel before we act? Most of the time, those things come after we begin, not before.
What actually helps folks move through a threshold isn’t certainty. Its curiosity. Its the willingness to stay in honest conversation with yourself, to listen to what your body already knows and to trust that you have navigated uncertainty before, and you wil again.
A Practice for the In-Between
During our conversation during the most recent episode of the Explore & Expand Podcast, we discuss ‘The Trip we Almost Didn’t Take’, and all the challenges that we faced before making the decisions to say “Yes!” to a travel experience and how these same challenges or mental/emotional patterns show up in many thresholds of our lives. If any of this resonates, we’ve created a FREE WORKBOOK for you to access to support you through moments of uncertainty and transition. Inside, you’ll find a guided meditation designed to assist in dropping our of the noise of the mind and into the wisdom of the body AND a series of reflective journal prompts designed to be used on your own time, at your own pace.
Sometimes the Most Powerful Thing is a Change of Scenery
Now, we maaaaay be biased in this mentality (we totally are) but we believe that there is something special that happens when you step outside of the context of your everyday life. The distance creates perspective, the unfamiliar can inspire a new kind of curiosity and honesty. With a bit of distance between you and your normal day-today, things you couldnt see clearly at home can begin to more easily come into focus.
This is one of the motivators for the creation of our business, Explore & Expand Retreats. To create spaces designed to give you the support, inspiration and the environment to hear yourself differently.
Our retreats bring together small groups of people interested exploring both their inner AND outer worlds. Through a blend of meaningful connection and the transformative power of travel to incredible destinations, our retreats offer something thats hard to find in everyday life: uninterupted time to explore and expand both your world view and your relationship to yourself.
Whether you’re navigation a life transition, craving deeper self-awareness, or simply feeling the pull of something new and exciting, one of our retreats might be exactly the threshold you’ve been standing at.
You Don’t Have to Figure This Out Alone
